Sure thing, Prince! Happy that you found value. Location is definitely hot, and I love the duopoly that's going on between Foursquare and Gowalla these days. Both are developing cool new features for SXSW; the question remains how they will differentiate from each other, as well as which one will prove a more successful business model.

Thanks for stopping by!

Maria - thanks for adding another layer of understanding on what to expect at SXSW this year.

I quite agree with TC's MG Siegler about location (hence people) being the star :)

Thanks for sharing!

Cheers,
Prince

Thanks, Stephanie! I'm still a little split between 4SQ and Gowalla, although personally I lean towards 4SQ. As far as new startups, I am pulling for Plancast! In the end, we are all winners!

Oi, those would be terrible logistics, indeed!

I still think that just because each product can be customized, it doesn't always make sense. I think it comes down to the lifecycle of the product and how involved the purchase process actually is. If it's a bottle of water or a roll of paper towels I'm buying, it will take more time and effort to customize it than the product is worth. If I know I'm going to own this product for a short time, and it's a low-involvement purchase, it's not even worth my time to even think about customization - I will take it as-is (coffee and restaurant food being an exception of course). However, some categories need to be more customized than they are (example: cars, clothes, etc).

How to deal with customer support for something so custom? Perhaps caution the customer that because what they are requesting is so different, they won't be able to support it. For a high ticket item, of which there are obviously fewer items produced, perhaps it's possible to support custom support with a customized product.

Interesting discussion!

This post made me think of an interesting and highly probable scenario. In an age where contract manufacturing makes it easy to do a 1:1 match for specific customer needs, the role of customer service becomes ever more important and ever more complicated.

What happens if a company produces so many variations on a product that CSRs (customer service reps) can no longer have the specific answers required on how to fix it?

Will that spawn a new industry of companies whose sole job is matching up all of the manufacturers you will need for service on your *highly personalized product* and then produce a meta-guide of mfgs and repair databases that mashup for you? Terrible logistics, but it could happen.
